The crown jewel
Start here: Bulgaria's most unique beer destination
BiraBar
Craft Beer · Cask Ale · Beer To Go · 13 Taps
There is nowhere quite like BiraBar in Bulgaria — and possibly in the whole of the Balkans. Tucked away on ul. Paris in Sofia's city centre, this unpretentious but deeply serious bar has built its entire identity around supporting independent Bulgarian craft breweries. Every one of its 13 taps pours something made by a small, domestic producer: IPAs with citrus-forward Bulgarian hops, rich stouts, refreshing lagers, pale ales of every shade. You won't find global macro lagers here, and that's entirely the point.
What truly sets BiraBar apart — and makes it a landmark for beer travellers from across Europe — is its cask-conditioned ale programme. This is the only venue in Bulgaria serving real ale in the traditional British sense: unfiltered, unpasteurised, naturally carbonated, and served at cellar temperature straight from the cask. For devotees of the form, it is a genuine pilgrimage stop. Alongside the cask line, the bar runs a full beer-to-go service, so you can take a crowler of whatever is on tap back to your accommodation. The atmosphere is warm and British-pub-adjacent, with knowledgeable staff who can talk you through every brewery on the board.

Take something home
Nosferatu
Bottle Shop · Bar vibe
The most bar-like of Sofia's bottle shops, Nosferatu leans into a hard rock aesthetic with a few tables inside where you can open and enjoy your selections on the spot. The staff are expert and genuinely enthusiastic — they can guide you through a vast selection of Bulgarian and international craft beers with authority. A must-visit on any Sofia craft beer crawl.

100 Beers
Bottle Shop · Est. 2013
Compact but punching well above its weight, 100 Beers stocks over 500 beers from Bulgaria, the US, Canada, Europe, and beyond — far exceeding its modest name. Open since 2013, it has been a driving force in Bulgaria's craft beer movement and is credited with organising the Balkan Beer Bash, an annual festival that draws enthusiasts from across the region. Four taps, chilled draught beer to go, and citywide delivery.

Dissident Beer Shop
Bottle Shop · Taproom
Run by the deeply passionate Kiryl, Dissident occupies a quiet side street off Patriarch Evtimiy and takes a wonderfully idiosyncratic approach: shelves organised by beer style rather than country, an eclectic crowd, and music carefully curated to match. Six taps rotate a selection that mirrors Kiryl's personal interests and the bar's free-spirited character. Perfect for sitting on the window sill and watching the world drift by.

Practical notes
How to drink well in Sofia
On gypsy brewing
Most Sofia "breweries" are gypsy operations — they create the recipes and branding, then brew at partner facilities. This means few have physical taprooms, but their beers appear on taps across the city.
Price expectations
Draft craft beer runs roughly 3–5 EUR per 33cl depending on strength and rarity. Bottles and cans from shops range from 4–7 EUR. Sofia's craft beer is excellent value by Western European standards.
On cask ale
BiraBar is the sole venue in Bulgaria offering cask-conditioned real ale. If you're visiting from the UK or are a real ale enthusiast, this alone makes BiraBar the starting point for your Sofia trip.
Brewery names to seek
Look out for Trima i Dvama, Rhombus, Rocket Science, Sofia Electric Brewing, Cometa Brewing, Kazan Artizan, Meltum — a diverse set of styles and approaches representing the best of Bulgaria's growing craft scene.
The bottle-shop crawl
Nosferatu, 100 Beers, and Dissident sit within easy walking distance. Do all three in an afternoon — buy a cold can at each to try on the spot, then stock up on your favourites before leaving.
Beer festivals
The annual Balkan Beer Bash, organised in part by 100 Beers, draws producers and enthusiasts from across the Balkans. Check 100beers.bg for dates if you're planning ahead.
