KANAAL

Craft Beer Bar · Est. 2011

Pioneer 30+ taps Beer garden DJ nights

KANAAL is the establishment that started it all. Founded in 2011 — when craft beer was a novelty concept in Bulgaria — by an owner who first discovered independent brewing in the Netherlands, it remains the city's most celebrated beer destination and a perennial favourite with both locals and visiting beer pilgrims. The name itself is a nod to two things: the water channel that runs nearby in Sofia's Oborishte neighbourhood, and the Dutch word for "canal," honouring the owner's Amsterdam connection.

The bar is bigger than it first appears — a narrow entrance opens into a sprawling indoor space with wooden furniture and ivy-clad walls, leading out to a generous beer garden that fills up fast on warm evenings. The tap selection is extensive: around 30 to 38 draught lines covering Bulgarian craft breweries alongside rare and sought-after international beers that KANAAL often brings to Eastern Europe exclusively. The bottle and can selection runs into the hundreds. Knowledgeable bartenders will steer you well, and the kitchen turns out Asian-inspired dishes that pair thoughtfully with the beer list. DJs play on Saturday nights and some Sundays. One of the best craft beer bars in the Balkans, full stop.

Vitamin B

Craft Beer Bar · Taproom

Self-service Sofia Electric hub Beer garden

Vitamin B has earned a devoted following by delivering an extraordinarily wide selection in a relaxed, no-fuss setting. The menu is legendary among regulars — reportedly seven pages long with around 50 beers per page — and the staff will confirm with a straight face that yes, they have them all. The bar operates a self-service system that lends a refreshingly casual energy: grab a seat, browse the vast menu, and order at your own pace without hovering waitstaff.

In recent years Vitamin B has developed a partnership with Sofia Electric Brewing, one of Bulgaria's most ambitious and quality-focused craft breweries. As a result, the tap list now prominently features Sofia Electric's range — from their crisp lagers through to their lauded Baltic Porter, Fortune Tamer. Look for the bright yellow door; it can be easy to miss. A sizeable beer garden out back offers shade in summer. This is the bar for serious explorers who want breadth and depth in a single sitting.

Chiki Riki Craft Beer & Wine

Craft Beer Bar · Wine Bar

Tasting events Wine & rakia Welcoming owners

Chiki Riki occupies a warm and cosy spot in Sofia's centre, distinguished from its peers by a dual focus: excellent Bulgarian craft beer alongside a thoughtfully curated wine list. It is run with genuine hospitality by co-owner Vladimir, who has a habit of chatting with guests about the beers, the wines, and what to explore elsewhere in the city — the kind of personal touch that turns a casual visit into a memorable one.

The bar actively promotes Bulgarian products in a broader sense, presenting the best of the country's brewing and winemaking to an international crowd of expats and tourists. Tastings and pairing events are hosted regularly, making it an ideal introduction to the Bulgarian craft drinks scene for the uninitiated. Don't leave without trying the chili rakia, a local curiosity that Vladimir cheerfully recommends to everyone. Consistently rated 5 stars for atmosphere, service, and selection.

Tap Local

Craft Beer Bar · Taproom

Kazan Artizan Vitosha water Near City Garden

Tap Local is Sofia's most intimate craft beer bar — a small, characterful room with a rock-and-roll edge, a community of regulars that spans musicians, tech workers, and sports enthusiasts, and one of the city's highest Google ratings (4.8 stars). It sits just steps from the Ivan Vazov National Theatre, making it the perfect pit stop between cultural sightseeing and the evening's wider explorations.

The bar is closely aligned with Kazan Artizan brewery, an independent Bulgarian producer that uses mountain spring water from Vitosha to craft its beers. The result is a tightly curated tap list — typically six beers — that rotates regularly and features styles from a punchy Triple IPA to more sessionable pale ales. The kitchen produces hearty Bulgarian-influenced comfort food: the meatballs and the tripe soup have their own devoted fans. Tasting flights of four 150ml pours are offered, making it easy to work through the whole tap list methodically. The owner is hands-on and passionate, always ready to discuss what's new on the board.

Cosmic Craft Beer

Beer Bar & Shop

Central location Grab & go Socially conscious

You can't get more central than Cosmic. It sits directly on Graf Ignatiev, one of Sofia's liveliest pedestrian streets, just steps from the Church of the Seven Saints. It's compact — a handful of tables inside plus a convivial standing-room atmosphere — but what it lacks in size it makes up for in character and location.

The tap list runs to six lines, featuring a mix of local Bulgarian craft breweries (including Sofia Electric Brewing) alongside European and occasional American imports. The bottle and can selection, while not as exhaustive as Nosferatu or 100 Beers, reliably carries Bulgarian beers you won't easily find elsewhere. Staff offer tastings before purchase, a rare touch that helps newcomers navigate confidently. Cosmic is also known in Sofia for taking principled social stances — a business that wears its values on its sleeve — and has a loyal following that respects both the beer and the ethos. Ideal for a quick pint or a park-and-go can on a sunny afternoon.

The bottle-shop triangle

Nosferatu, 100 Beers, and Dissident Beer Shop are all within a 10–15-minute walk of each other in the area around Patriarch Evtimiy. If you can't find a particular beer at one, you'll almost certainly track it down at another.

Compact but punching well above its weight, 100 Beers stocks over 500 beers from Bulgaria, the US, Canada, Europe, and beyond — far exceeding its modest name. Open since 2013, it has been a driving force in Bulgaria's craft beer movement and is credited with organising the Balkan Beer Bash, an annual festival that draws enthusiasts from across the region. Dissident Beer Shop

Bottle Shop · Taproom

Run by the deeply passionate Kiryl, Dissident occupies a quiet side street off Patriarch Evtimiy and takes a wonderfully idiosyncratic approach: shelves organised by beer style rather than country, an eclectic crowd, and music carefully curated to match. Six taps rotate a selection that mirrors Kiryl's personal interests and the bar's free-spirited character. Perfect for sitting on the window sill and watching the world drift by.

How to drink well in Sofia

On gypsy brewing

Most Sofia "breweries" are gypsy operations — they create the recipes and branding, then brew at partner facilities. This means few have physical taprooms, but their beers appear on taps across the city.

Price expectations

Draft craft beer runs roughly 3–5 EUR per 33cl depending on strength and rarity. Bottles and cans from shops range from 4–7 EUR. Sofia's craft beer is excellent value by Western European standards.

On cask ale

BiraBar is the sole venue in Bulgaria offering cask-conditioned real ale. If you're visiting from the UK or are a real ale enthusiast, this alone makes BiraBar the starting point for your Sofia trip.

Brewery names to seek

Look out for Trima i Dvama, Rhombus, Rocket Science, Sofia Electric Brewing, Cometa Brewing, Kazan Artizan, Meltum — a diverse set of styles and approaches representing the best of Bulgaria's growing craft scene.

The bottle-shop crawl

Nosferatu, 100 Beers, and Dissident sit within easy walking distance. Do all three in an afternoon — buy a cold can at each to try on the spot, then stock up on your favourites before leaving.

Beer festivals

The annual Balkan Beer Bash, organised in part by 100 Beers, draws producers and enthusiasts from across the Balkans. Check 100beers.bg for dates if you're planning ahead.
